"Prohibitions and Prescriptions in the Slavic and Jewish Cultural Traditions"

Conference "the Prohibitions and Prescriptions in Slavic and Jewish cultural tradition" was held from 6 to 8 December 2017, and became the twenty-first in a row of annual meetings of scientists, since 1995, working on the international project "the Culture of Slavs and the culture of Jews: dialogue, similarities, differences" which is being held by the Center for Slavic-Jewish studies of the Institute of Slavic studies, in cooperation with various scientific and public organizations interested in the dialogue of cultures. The conference was supported by the Russian science Foundation (grant 15-18-00143).

A wide range of issues related to the issues of prohibitions, prescriptions and their violations in a variety of manifestations were discussed at the conference. Prescriptions performances and texts form an integral part of traditional culture, correlate with the value system of the ethnic and religious traditions form one of the most important axiological cultural categories. The conference focused on such issues as the formation and functioning of the system of prohibitions and prescriptions in various ethnic and religious traditions, the composition and typology of transcription texts, the ratio of normative law and actual (action, verbal) behavior, the function of prohibitions and prescriptions in the ritual context, etc.
The proceedings of the conference will be published in a collection indexed in the RSCI system.

Dear colleagues,
We are happy to announce the call for papers for the XXI Annual scientific conference, which is the next stage of the multi-year project on comparative study of Jewish and Slavic cultures.

The conference "Prohibitions and Prescriptions in the Slavic and Jewish Cultural Traditions" will be the twenty-first in a series of annual meetings of scientists, since 1995 working on the international project in comparative study of Jewish and Slavic cultures and traditions, carried out by the Institute for Slavic Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with various scientific and public organizations interested in the dialogue of cultures.
A wide range of issues related to the topic of prohibitions, regulations and their violations in various manifestations are expected to be discussed at the conference.
Prescriptive texts and understandings form an integral part of traditional culture, correlate with the system of values of ethnic and confessional traditions, form one of the most important axiological cultural categories.

The formation and functioning of a system of prohibitions and regulations in various ethno-confessional traditions will be the main focus of the conference, as well as the content and typology of prescriptive texts, the correlation between the normative law and actual (active, verbal) behavior, the function of prohibitions and prescriptions in the ritual context, etc. These problems are supposed to be discussed on the basis of oral and written texts, language monuments, folklore, literature, philosophy, music culture, fine arts.

We welcome interdisciplinary and comparative approach and are waiting for the reports of historians, philologists, folklorists and ethnographers.

Organizers provide accommodation in Moscow for nonresident participants. Unfortunately the Organizing Committee does not have the opportunity to cover the travel costs of the participants.
