Hebrew Proficiency for University Teachers of Jewish Studies –
Reading Academic Hebrew Texts

The International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications to participate in its workshop forprofessors, post-doctoral and doctoral students in fields related to Jewish Studies who seek to improve their reading ability of academic literature in Modern Hebrew.

The two-week workshop this year will take place on the Mt. Scopus campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from Monday 30 July, through Thursday, 9 August.

Participants inthespecially tailored workshop will improve their proficiency in the specific Hebrew terminology required in their field of teaching and research, thereby gaining better access to a larger body of sources and bibliography – both classical and current – which are available only in Hebrew. Spending two weeks in the academic environment of Jerusalem will help achieve this goal.

The program:

ØClasses will meet each morning over a period of two weeks (40 teaching hours), during which the participating scholars will be immersed in academic texts written in Modern Hebrew.

ØClassroom instruction will consist of reading and analyzing texts, with special emphasis given to building vocabulary and coping with syntax.

ØParticipants will be introduced to essential tools that may help them with the task of reading and studying Hebrew texts and sources, such as various general dictionaries, specialized lexicons and online databases.

ØParticipants will become familiarized with the structure and style of modern academic Hebrew.

ØThe curriculum will include articles in the different fields of the participants, who are urged to submit the titles of articles that they wish to read.

ØReading selections will be taken from the leading academic Hebrew journals, and may also include chapters from seminal monographs written in Modern Hebrew. Some specimens of other types of Modern Hebrew writing (e.g. from daily newspaper, contemporary literary texts) will also be introduced in order to familiarize the participants with a spectrum of Modern Hebrew registers.

ØWhen possible, authors of articles will be invited to discuss their works with the participants.

General information:

ØThe intensive workshop is open to those who already read Modern Hebrew and successfully pass a placement exam.

ØThe costs of accommodation, board, and travel to and from Israel are the responsibility of participants or their sponsoring institutions.

ØAccommodationcan be arranged through the International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization.

§Montefiore Hotel in the center of Jerusalem:

$101 per night, on the basis of single occupancy, bed and breakfast.

Additional rates (double room, double occupancy, meals on campus) are available on request.

ØThe fee for participation in the workshop is NIS 1,000.

ØEuropean scholars may apply to The Academic Jewish Studies in Europe Grant Programme (The Rothschild Foundation Europe) for a Language Studies Grant to help defray the costs of participation.
